The Artwork アートワーク

“In 1968, I came across a beautiful piece of cloth."

"The mysterious construction of threads drew me into the world of weaving. Since 1975, I have been using metallic materials using varied techniques - weaving, sewing, knitting, twisting and others.

They are drawings of yaoyoro-zu-no-kami, myriad gods that I feel in Japanese nature and that I celebrate. I have been influenced by Japanese art and being an artist in Japan, but also by having exhibited my work in 15 countries.”

The Artist アーティスト

Initially, Kyoko Kumai worked as a weaver, gradually developing her own interlacing and knotting techniques.

She has been working stainless steel filaments since 1975 — resulting in airy, seemingly weightless objects and hangings that offer a sense of movement. Her work has been featured in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and is in the Museum's permanent collection. She is also in the permanent collection of Savaria Museum, Hungary.
